WANARISET, Indonesia -- My first true walk through the rain forest of Borneo was in this stand near the TROPENBOS Wanariset-Samboja research station (made famous by several TV documentaries featuring station director Willie Smits and his orangutan rehabilitation efforts) in East Kalimantan. This forest has been heavily disturbed, but it was still impressive. I began my hate affair with rattan along this trail. Rattans, with their wicked thorns, are almost as effective as concertina wire in ripping apart flesh.
