BOGOR, Indonesia -- The large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) is a conspicuous resident of the Bogor Botanical Garden. One of the largest bat species in the world -- with a wingspan of nearly 1.5 meters, or about 4-1/2 feet -- it feasts on fruit rather than on any other substance suggested by the name vampyrus. They roost in the trees in rather noisy groups -- kind of like 7-year-olds pestering each other in a lunch line.
